2002

  • Exhibition "From Poussin to Cezanne: 300 Years of French Painting" extended from previous year.
  • Traveling Exhibit "One Hundred Treasures of the National Palace Museum" shown at the Kaohsiung Museum of History.

2003

  • Following the decision by the Executive Yuan, NPM's Southern Branch Site-Selection Team chose Taibao City in Chiayi County as the final site for construction.
  • Special Exhibition "Ilha Formosa—The Emergence of Taiwan on the World Scene in the 17th Century" opened at the National Palace Museum.
  • The "Preparatory Committee Meeting for NPM's Southern Branch Site held its first meeting.
  • The NPM SARS epidemic prevention center was put into place. Body temperature check was required for all Museum staff and visitors.
  • To prevent SARS and any negative influence on the Museum's operations, a second office was put into place.
  • SARS-prevention training drills were held.
  • Formal signing of loan agreement by NPM and Germany for the "German Reciprocal Exhibition".
  • Special Exhibition "Ilha Formosa—The Rediscovery of Zeelandia" opened at the National Tainan Social Education Center.
  • Press conference held for the packing of objects to be sent to Germany for the "Treasures of the Sons of Heaven—The Imperial Collection from the National Palace Museum, Taipei" Exhibition.

  • Special Exhibition "Treasures of the Sons of Heaven—The Imperial Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei" moved to Bonn for display.
  • Public online bidding opened to choose the consultant for the "Planning and Development" of NPM's Southern Branch.
  • The "Renovation of Main Building's Public Space & Gallery Area and Improvement of Peripheral Environs" project plus the "Architectural Reinforcement against Earthquakes (for the Main Building)" project tenders were reviewed and Ta Chen Engineering & Construction Corporation was selected as winner.
  • The Museum reinstated its SARS epidemic prevention mechanism, and all Museum staff and visitors were still required to be checked for body temperature.
  • The Museum received the award for "excellence" in the Executive Yuan's "Building an English Living Environment" program.

2004

  • The Museum hosted "The Arts and Cultures of Asia" Exhibition in Chiayi County.
  • The German Exhibition "Treasures of the Sons of Heaven—The Imperial Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei" concluded at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn.
  • Arrangements were made for the loan of a reciprocal exhibition from Germany to the National Palace Museum.
  • On April 1, renovations of the Main Building and environs, as well as reinforcements against earthquakes formally began.
  • Items for the reciprocal exhibition from Germany were shipped one by one to the National Palace Museum. Arrangements were made for crates' opening, inspection, and installation.
  • A prototype of the 3D virtual artworks display system was created.
  • The reciprocal loan exhibition from Germany officially opened to the public.
  • The Museum organized the "2004 Festival Audiovisuel International Musees & Patrimoine" conference with multimedia display and competition.
  • The reciprocal exhibition "A Century of German Genius—Masterpieces from Classicism to Early Modernism, Collections of the Berlin State Museums" concluded at the National Palace Museum.
  • Production for movie "The NPM Passage" continued from last year and ended this year.
  • The 3D virtual artworks system was completed.

  • The completion, expansion, and maintenance of the digital learning system "NPM e-Learning" completed.
  • The team of judges selected Antoine Predock from the U.S. as the architectural designer of the Southern Branch of the Museum.
  • The "Museum Digital Learning Demonstration Center—Display Systems" for 2004 completed.
  • German counterparts signed an agreement to borrow works from the Museum for their "Genghis Khan and his Heirs: The Mongolian Empire" Special Exhibition.

2005

  • Exhibited the e-Learning system "Butterflies are enamored by the flowery path, dancing lightly in the night breeze: e-Learning in the National Palace Museum" at the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and other locations.
  • Entered loan exhibition agreement with Germany regarding the "Ghengis Khan and His Heirs" Special Exhibition.
  • Hosted the "See All of Asia at the National Palace Museum" charity sales event.
  • Participated in the "2004 National Digitization Project Results Exhibition" held by the National Museum of Natural Science.
  • National Museum of History hosted "The Art of Tun Huang" Exhibition. Exhibition artifacts loaned by the National Palace Museum underwent inspection and transportation. Arrangements were made to successfully run the exhibition.
  • Completion of a Multimedia Information Viewing Area for the Museum Library.
  • Hosted the "Aesthetic Experience of Senior Citizens at the NPM" event.
  • Hosted the "International Workshop on Southeast Asian Arts" with Ecole Française d'Extreme-Orient (EFEO).
  • Hosted the "Casting of Religion" Special Exhibition series (for the Saturday Asian Culture Day event).
  • Hosted "The World and Its Warp and Woof: A Special Exhibition of Antique Maps Donated by Prof. Johannes Hajime Iizuka" Event.

  • Ms. Lin Mun-lee took office as new Director of the Museum.

  • Held the "Festival du film francophone" and "Old is New at NPM: Modern T-Shirt Design Competition".
  • "National Palace Museum Souvenirs Online" e-store began operation.
  • Paintings by Giuseppe Castiglione in the National Palace Museum's collection moved to Musée Guimet, France for the "Grand Era of the Ch'ing Palace" Exhibition.
  • Held the "Museums of the Future International Conference and Symposium".
  • "Commissioning of 3D (2D included) and Above Digital Photographs and Related Image Products Production".
  • "Old is New NPM Image Advertisement" won the Gold Award for the 2006 American Association of Museums' "MUSE Award".

2007

  • Presented "Charioting in the Shang Dynasty – Artifacts from the Horse-and-Chariot Pits Hsiao-tun" and "Lasting Impressions: Seals from the Museum Collection."
  • Completion of the architectural improvement for the Main Building; followed by the "NPM Reopening" ceremony and reception.
  • Opened forum "Founding Paradigms—Art and Culture of the Northern Sung."
  • Hosted the "2007 Winter Artifact Workshop" and "NPM Outdoor Art Festival."
  • Presented Permanent Exhibitions "Dazzling Gems of the Collection: Famous Pieces from the Ch'ing Dynasty Palaces," "Arts from the Ch'ing Imperial Collection," and "Splendors of Ch'ing Furniture."
  • Presented "Grand View: Northern Sung Painting and Calligraphy, Ju Ware, and Rare Books" to 500,000 visitors.

  • Effective July 1, the group touring system was made available to the public; the museum also began to open on Saturday nights.
  • Introduced "Discovering the Other - International Film Installations."
  • Presented with the National Museum of Prehistory "The Perspective of a Century – Taiwan's Indigenous People as Documented and a Special Introduction to Taidong."

  • "National Palace Museum Organization Act" sanctioned by the Legislative Yuan during the sixth meeting session.
  • In the "2007 Digital Archive Commercial Application Contest" and under the National Digital Archives Program, "Buddhism Document Theme Website" came in third place in game animation design, and "Treasure of the Imperial Court Theme Website" won the outstanding work award in game animation design.

2008

  • Third reading of "National Palace Museum Organization Act" passed by the Legislative Yuan, and promulgated for enforcement by order of the President.
  • Hosted "The Tradition of Re-Presenting Art" Exhibition.
  • Hosted "The Ancient Art of Writing" Exhibition.
  • Hosted "The Subtle Radiance of Colors: Treasured Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum" Exhibition.
  • "Imperial Treasures – Masterpieces from the National Palace Museum, Taiwan" exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
  • Hosted the "Exploring Asia – Episode One of the NPM Southern Branch" Exhibition.
  • Animated motion picture "Adventures in the National Palace Museum" won first prize at the Tokyo International Animation Fair.
  • National Palace Museum began to open on Saturday nights, with visits to the Main Hall exhibitions free of charge.

  • Amendments made to the "Operating Agreement for Publications, Artifact Duplications and Restaurant Businesses of the Museum" between the National Palace Museum and the NPM Employee Cooperative, inserting the provision that 10% of the Cooperative's profit to be paid to the National Treasury as operating royalty; and public welfare fund was raised from 10% to 20% .

  • National Security Bureau agreed to allocate its health services school (originally a designated national defence management location for school academy) for the construction of a "Cultural Innovation Industry Incubation Center" for the National Palace Museum.

2009

  • Hosted the "Famous Works of Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy" Exhibition.
