Paintings of the Twelve Months
Anonymous court artists, Qing dynasty
Hanging scroll, ink and colors on silk, 175×97cm

The subject of the "twelve months" refers to paintings depicting seasonal themes and customs in each of the lunar months. It has a long history in the traditional genre painting of China. This set of twelve "Paintings of the Twelve Months" from the Qing painting academy was completed as a cooperative project in the second year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign (1737) by court artists. Each was hung in the palace in the corresponding lunar month and changed in order. All twelve hanging scrolls are of the same size and feature identical mountings. Figures are engaged in various activities against backgrounds mostly of landscapes and buildings, the painting technique combining Chinese and Western methods in a detailed and realistic style.
