Exhibit Info

Have you ever been to the National Palace Museum? Do you know how many treasures are there in the Museum?

The collection of cultural artifacts held inside the National Palace Museum consists an enormous treasure trove of objects from the imperial household of the Sung (960-1279), Yuan (1279-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Ch'ing (1644-1911) dynasties. This treasure trove now houses more than 650,000 items, including ceramics, jades, coins, paintings, bronze, calligraphy, yet less than 10 thousands of items can be displayed in the Museum at one time due to limited exhibition/ gallery space. Moreover, an artwork in the Museum’s painting and calligraphy collection is displayed for no more than three months at one time, with some for 40 days at most. This measure is taken in order to protect these ancient treasures from damages caused by environmental conditions such as lighting.

This limitation of display gradually highlights the role of technology plays in the field of arts. In 2000, the Museum started the digital archive projects to digitalize the artworks in its collection. Curators, exhibition designers, multimedia artists are brought together, selecting famous artworks that offer rich narratives and providing these artworks with alternative interpretation through audio, lighting and interaction design. With the help of technology, the fragile works of art were given new lives, showing vivid vitality as blossoming flowers.

"NPM's Anime Carnival" presents digital installations developed in the past 2 years, popular animation films and replicas of the most classic, rarely-exhibited treasures. We would like to remind you, you will need to engage different senses to experience this art tour/ excursion, sometimes even keen observation and extra speed will be needed. We hope this fascinating and animating exhibition will excite your curiosity about Chinese history and interests in arts.
