1921

With the expulsion of P'u-i from the Forbidden City in the previous year, the government formed the Committee for the Disposition of the Ch'ing Imperial Possessions and took a comprehensive inventory of the articles in the Imperial Palace. On the 10th of October, the Palace Museum was inaugurated, and public exhibitions were launched.
   
1928

China was united at the close of the Northern Expedition, and the Nationalist Government regained control of the Palace Museum. I P'ei-chi was appointed Director of the Museum in the following year.

1933


The Shan-hai-kuan Checkpoint fell to the Japanese army. With the situation in north China precarious, the Museum's collection was removed to Shanghai.
The Preparatory Office of the Central Museum was formed, with Fu Ssu-nien as Head.
   
1934


The Palace Museum was placed under the control of the Executive Yuan, and Ma Heng was appointed Director.
Li Chi was named Head of the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum. The Office made two acquisitions from the Shan-chai and Sung-chai studios.
   
1935


The Palace Museum was invited to participate in the "London International Exhibition of Chinese Art."
The Preparatory Office of the Central Museum accepted relics excavated in Lopupo, Hsinchiang, by the Northwestern Exploratory Team led by Sven A. Hedin of Sweden.
   
1936


The construction of the Palace Museum's storage in the Taoist monastery Ch'ao-t'ien-kung in Nanking was completed.
The Board of Directors of the Central Museum was constituted, with Ts'ai Yuan-p'ei serving as Chairman.
   
1937

The collections of the Palace Museum and the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum were moved in batches to Ch'ang-sha, Han-k'ou and Pao-chi.
   
1938


The collection of the Palace Museum continued to be shipped westward, and it was dispersed further from the front. The following year, an office was established in Szechwan.
The collection of the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum was stored in a temporary warehouse at Sha-p'ing-pa Dam.
   
1940


The Palace Museum was invited to organize the "Chinese Art Exhibition" in Moscow and Leningrad in the Soviet Union.
The Preparatory Office of the Central Museum was removed to Li-chuang, Nan-hsi in Szechwan.
   
1941

Professionals of the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum conducted archaeological excavations in the cliff burial sites in P'eng-shan, Szechwan, and undertook investigations of the Mo-so culture in Li-chiang, Yunnan.

1942


The Palace Museum and the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum participated in the third "National Art Exhibition".
Professionals of the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum and the Institute of History and Philology of Academia Sinica cooperated in conducting archaeological surveys of the history and geography of the northwestern region, and to study and re-organize in the following year the tomb of a king of the Former Shu of the Five Dynasties in Ch'in-t'ai.
   
1945

With the surrender of Japan, the premises of the Palace Museum in Peking and Nanking were taken charge of by Shen Chien-shih and Chiang Fu-ts'ung, respectively.
   
1946


The restoration of the Palace Museum and the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum began.
The Mao-kung ting and Ssu-mu-wu ting tripods were put in the care of the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum.
   
1948

Essential works from the collections of the Palace Museum and the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum were selected for removal to Taiwan, and so were rare books of the Central Library as well as the artifacts of the Institute of History and Philology at Academia Sinica.
   
1949

With the crates of artifacts and rare books arriving in Taiwan (231,910 objects, etc., from the Palace Museum; 11,729 objects from the Central Museum), the Executive Yuan created the Joint Managerial Office of the Palace Museum, the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum and the Central Library to oversee their organization and storage in Wu-feng, Pei-kou in Taichung.
   
1951

The Joint Managerial Office began taking inventory of the works moved to Taiwan.

1954

The inventory of the collections of the Joint Managerial Office was completed. The Palace Museum, the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum and the Central Library collaborated to publish "A Collection of Chinese Art".
   
1955

The National Central Library was reinstated, and it was removed from the Joint Managerial Office. The Joint Managerial Office of the National Palace Museum and the Preparatory Office of the National Central Museum continued to release publications, including "Collection of Chinese Fine Art" (1955), "National Palace Museum Painting and Calligraphy Catalog" (1956), "Catalog of Bronze Vessels in the National Palace Museum" (1958), "Three Hundred Masterpieces of Chinese Painting in the Palace Museum" (1959) and "Catalog of the Porcelain Collection of the National Palace Museum" (1961).
   
1957

The exhibition gallery in Pei-kou was officially opened.
   
1961

The Joint Managerial Office sent a selection of fine works of art to the United States for exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Art Institute in Chicago and the de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco.

1965

The construction of the new museum in Waishuangxi in Taipei was completed. The Executive Yuan promulgated the regulations for the Provisional Board of Directors of the National Palace Museum, and Wang Yun-wu was elected Chairman of the Board. Chiang Fu-ts'ung began to serve as the Director of the Museum until his retirement in 1983.
   
1966


Special exhibitions of Ch'ing enameled porcelains and bronze mirrors were held.
The "National Palace Museum Newsletter" and the "National Palace Museum Quarterly" began publication.
   
1967


The first phase of the Museum's expansion was completed, and the "Tianxiaweigong" archway and ornamental columns were erected.
Arrangements were made to borrow and exhibit artifacts unearthed by the Institute of History and Philology of Academia Sinica.
   
1968


The "Conference on Chinese Porcelain" was held.
Special exhibitions of Chinese porcelain through the Sung, Yüan, Ming and Ch'ing dynasties and miniature crafts of the Ch'ien-lung Emperor were held.
   
1969

Visitor services were expanded, and guided tours in Chinese, English and Japanese tours were launched.
A special exhibition of the treasures of the Lan-ch'ien Shan-kuan Collection was held, and a catalog was simultaneously published.
The "National Palace Museum Document Quarterly" and the "National Palace Museum Exhibition Newsletter" began publication. The "Old Manchu Archives" was published.
   
1970


The "Conference on Ancient Chinese Painting" was held.
The collaboration with Tsinghua University's Institute of Atomic Science to conduct research on the appraisal of ancient Chinese paintings was initiated.
A special exhibition of paintings from the Ming and Ch'ing dynasties was held, and a catalog was simultaneously published.
   
1971

The second phase of the Museum's expansion was completed.
Assisted the Institute of History of National Taiwan University in setting up the Department of Art History.
Guided tours for elementary and junior high school students were initiated.
Special exhibitions of Sung and Yuan porcelains, paintings of the Chin, T'ang and Five Dynasties and books and documents in Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan scripts were organized.

A special exhibition of Ming dynasty Hsüan-te porcelains was held, and a catalog was simultaneously published.

Special exhibitions of lacquer wares through the ages and Ch'ing dynasty ceramic wares of monochrome glaze were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.

Special exhibitions of early Ming dynasty porcelains, the painting of P'u Hsin-yü, stele rubbings and the paintings of Cheng Man-ch'ing were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
The "Illustrated Catalog of Ancient Jade Artifacts in the National Palace Museum" was published.
   
1983

Ch'in Hsiao-yi took over as Director of the Museum until his retirement in 2000.
The Chang Dai-ch'ien Memorial Residence was opened for public visit by appointment.
Began to organize the annual exhibition of "Treasured Paintings and Calligraphic Works."
Special exhibitions of Hindustan jade objects, dragon-motif porcelains and grain vessels of the Shang and Chou dynasties were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
Permanent exhibitions of Ch'ing dynasty curio cabinets and jade artifacts were launched.
Cooperated with the Commercial Press of Taiwan to publish the Wen-yüan Pavilion edition of the "Ssu-k'u ch'üan-shu". The "National Palace Museum Monthly of Chinese Art", the "National Palace Museum Research Quarterly" and the "5,000 Years of Chinese Art" series began publication.
   
1984

The third phase of the Museum's expansion was completed.
The summer art seminar program was launched.
A special exhibition of paintings on the theme of the odes to the Red Cliff was held.
The permanent exhibition on the relationship between Chinese and world cultures was staged.
   
1985

The construction of the Zhishan Garden was completed.
Special exhibitions of bronze mirrors, Ming dynasty porcelains of the Chia-ching and Wan-li periods and works of the four master calligraphers of the Sung were held.
Permanent exhibitions of bronze vessels of Shang, Chou and Han dynasties, porcelains through the ages, furniture from the residence of the Ch'ing dynasty Prince Kung, Ming and Ch'ing enamel wares, Ch'ing costume accessories and Ming and Ch'ing carvings and lacquer wares were organized.
An exhibition of Shang oracle bones and the Shang royal tomb #1001 from Hou-chia-chuang Village on loan from the Academia Sinica was staged.
   
1986

Special exhibitions of famous calligraphic pieces of cursive script, insect paintings, ritual bronze vessels and musical instruments, Ch'ing porcelains of the K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung reigns, ruled-line paintings and bronze seals were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
   
1987



The regulations governing the organization of the Museum were promulgated and enacted, and the Museum was officially put under the jurisdiction of the Executive Yuan.
Special exhibitions of spring landscapes, the aesthetics of ink in landscape painting, Sung Ting ware and Chinese gardens on paper and silk were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
A special loan exhibition of gold-plated Buddhist bronzes, entitled "The Crucible of Compassion" was staged.
   
1988



The film "The Birth of Chinese Characters", produced by the Museum, won an award for special achievement at the 1988 "International Multimedia Film Exhibition".
Special exhibitions of paintings on women, the poetry of T'ao Yüan-ming as the painter's muse, paintings of rare birds, winter landscapes, bronze wine vessels and Sung dynasty Kuan wares were organized, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
A loan exhibition of gold and silver ornaments from Southeast Asia was held.
   
1989

A comprehensive inventory of the Museum's collection was begun.
The Museum began to train local volunteers and to host the children's "Activity and Creativity" classes.
Special exhibitions of famous ink stones of the Lan-ch'ien Shan-kuan Collection, snuff bottles, works of Ch'iu Ying and autumn landscapes were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
The permanent exhibition of ancient pottery was staged.
A "Catalogue Raisonne of the Collection of Painting and Calligraphy in the National Palace Museum" and "The Ssu-k'u Ch'uan-shu Collated" began publication.
   
1990

Special exhibitions of paintings of children at play, arhats, and plum blossoms were staged, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
   
1991


The inventory of the Museum's collection was completed.
The Museum's Advisory Committee was convened by the Executive Yuan.
The "International Colloquium on Chinese Art History" was held.
The Museum was invited to participate in the exposition "Circa 1492: Art in the Age of Exploration", organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Special exhibitions of summer landscapes and Ch'ing enameled porcelains were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
A loan exhibition of the watercolors of Lan Yin-ting was staged.

The Museum began to train foreign volunteers.
Special exhibitions of the aesthetic beauty of calligraphy, the calligraphic works of Wang Ch'ung, Ming and Ch'ing dynasty fan painting and calligraphy and the paintings of Lu Chih were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
   
1993

The Executive Yuan ratified the by-laws regulating the work of the Museum
The "Conference on the Poetry, Painting and Calligraphy of Chang Dai-chien and P'u Hsin-yü" was held.
Special exhibitions of Shang dynasty bronze inscriptions, the incense burners through the dynasties, the calligraphy of Tung Ch'i-ch'ang, and Sung-hua inkstones were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
The exhibition "Monet et les Impressionnistes au Musee Marmottan" was held.
   
1994



The Museum organized the exhibition "Great National Treasures of China" at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.
Special exhibitions of Tibetan Buddhist implements and calligraphic works of the Yun-chien School were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
The interactive CD-ROM "Five Millennia of Chinese Art: Images of a Spiritual Journey" was released, and the compilation of "Ch'ing Archival Materials on Taiwan" began.
   
1995


The fourth phase of the Museum's expansion and the construction of the Zhide Garden were completed.
The Museum began providing audio guided tour service in Chinese, English and Japanese.
Special exhibitions of circular jade objects, illustrations of "The Lotus Sutra", the auspicious ju-i scepters, and bird-and-flower paintings of Lü Chi were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
The loan presentations of "Famous Paintings of the XVI-XIX Centuries from the Louvre Museum" and "Collectors' Exhibition of Archaic Chinese Jades" were staged.
   
1996


The Museum's exhibition "Splendors of Imperial China" traveled to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Asian Art in San Francisco and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Special exhibitions of porcelains with auspicious designs, Taoist paintings and furniture in paintings were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
The permanent exhibitions of gilt bronze Buddhist statues and the history of the book in China were showcased.
   
1997


The installation of the Chinese and English web sites was completed.
The island-wide exhibition "One Hundred Treasures of the National Palace Museum" was organized, and a catalog was published to accompany the show. A separate exposition entitled "The Beauty of Chinese Art" was put together to travel to Taiwan's youth detention centers.
Special exhibitions of archaic and pictorial jades of the Ch'ing dynasty court, paintings of the theme of Chung K'uei, ancient ink stones and painting of Wang Yüan-ch'i were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
Two loan exhibitions were held: one of religious sculpture, entitled "The Art of Contemplation", and the other of diplomatic documents of the Ch'ing dynasty.
   
1998


Co-organized with the Tamkang University the first "Conference on the Research of Chinese Documentation".
The exhibition "Memoire d'Empire: Tresors du Musee National du Palais, Taipei", was held in Paris, France.
A special exhibition of Ming dynasty Hsüan-te porcelains was held, and a catalog was simultaneously published.
The loan exhibitions of Western paintings and sculpture highlighting the theme of women and of the art of Chang Dai-ch’ien and Pablo Picasso were organized.
   
1999


A traveling exhibition of the Museum's finest reproductions was sent to Central America
With the cooperation of the Soochow University, the project of constructing a full-text and image retrieval system for the "Encyclopedia Collected from Sources Old and New (Ku-chin t'u-shu chi-ch'eng)", was initiated.
A series of cultural and educational programs was organized after Taiwan was hit by a major earthquake on September 21.
Special exhibitions of Ming and Ch'ing dynasty enamel wares and the landscape painting tradition of Li Ch'eng (916-967) and Kuo Hsi were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
Several loan exhibitions were held, including archaeological finds from the San-hsing-tui site in Szechwan, Han artifacts from the collections of various museums in Kwangtung, jade objects collected by local connoisseurs, the paintings of Yang San-lang and historical documents on Macao. 
   
2000


Tu Cheng-sheng became the Museum's Director.
Institutionalization was promoted and guidelines regulating the promotion of the professional staff was enacted. All other relevant rules and regulations governing the employment and promotion of non-professional staff were revised as well.
Small academic discussions were held, where members of the professional staff periodically presented the results of their research.
The Museum was invited to participate in the exhibition "Taoism and the Arts of China" jointly organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
The "National Palace Museum Research Quarterly" received a face-lift.
German, French and Spanish versions of the Museum's web pages went on-line.
A special exhibition of jade objects acquired by the Museum over the years was held, which was accompanied by a conference on related issues.
Special exhibitions of paintings in the ruled-line format, art of the Sung dynasty, Chün ware and images of Kuan-yin (the Goddess of Mercy) were held, and catalogs were simultaneously published.
Two loan exhibitions were held: one of images of children in Western art and the other of cultural relics from the Mongolian steppes.
   
2001


An expansion project entitled "The National Palace Museum in the New Century" was initiated, outlining the prospects of development for the Museum in the 21st century.
The regulations governing the administration of the Museum's Collection Development Fund was approved by the Legislature.
The interior of the Museum's lobby received a face-lift.
The revised "National Palace Museum Newsletter" began publication.
The Museum donated NT$1,000,000 out of the staff's Welfare Fund to Salvadoran earthquake relief, and held the "921: Warmth of Humanity" charity sale, donating the proceeds of NT$1,000,000 for the rebuilding of homes in the disaster area.
A new series of the domestic exhibition "One Hundred Treasures of the National Palace Museum" was put together, and a catalog was published.
Four conferences were held: "Representations of the Literary Mind: the Theme of Poetry and Literature in Chinese Art", "Ch'ing Archives and the Study of the History of Taiwan", "Age of the Great Khan: Pluralism in Chinese Art and Culture under the Mongols" and "Rare Books of the Sung and Yüan Dynasties".
Special exhibitions of the art of painting and calligraphy of Lu Chih, paintings of Chinese festivals, collectanea and encyclopedias, calligraphic works and seal carvings of Wang Chuang-wei, the themes of poetry and literature in Chinese art, famous historical figures of Taiwan, Western Chou bronze inscriptions, selections of Ming dynasty calligraphy, insect paintings, Neolithic jades from the Yellow River valley, Ch'ing dynasty calligraphy, art and culture of the Yüan dynasty and paintings of birds.
Three loan exhibitions were held on the works of Salvador Dali, the paintings of Li Mei-shu, and oracle bones.
The reciprocal exhibition "From Poussin to Cezanne: 300 Years of French Painting" was held at the Museum.

The team for selecting the site of the future Southern Branch of the Museum begin initial voting, choosing eight potential sites for the second round of selection.

The special exhibit "Ilha Formosa—The Emergence of Taiwan on the World Scene in the 17th Century" opens at the Museum.
The "Preparatory Committee Meeting for the Southern Branch Site of the National Palace Museum" meets for the first time.
The Museum's SARS epidemic prevention center is established, and all Museum staff and visitors are checked for body temperature.
To prevent SARS from affecting Museum operations, a second office is established.
Drills are held to prevent SARS.
The Museum and Germany formally sign a loan agreement for a "German reciprocal exhibition".

Arrangements are made for the loan of a reciprocal exhibit from Germany to the National Palace Museum.
On April 1, construction on the renovation of the Main Building, environs, and for reinforcement against earthquakes formally begins.
