Taipei, Taiwan - October 2, 2009 – Among the loan artworks to the National Palace Museum's special exhibition "Harmony and Integrity: The Yongzheng Emperor and His Times" are 37 from the Palace Museum in Beijing. After traveling across the 200 kilometers of the Taiwan Strait and six decades, they now rejoin their counterparts at the National Palace Museum in Taipei as part of this grand event. At the press conference for the crate opening on October 2, the National Palace Museum presented the artworks from Beijing, which will formally go on display at the exhibit opening on October 7.
"Harmony and Integrity: The Yongzheng Emperor and His Times" represents the concrete results of "substantial exchange between the Palace Museums" that took place between both institutions since February and March of this year. The 37 loan pieces from the Beijing Palace Museum include a formal portrait of Yongzheng, paintings of him in life, and various artifacts, providing this exhibition with greater insight and a better overview of this pivotal figure in Qing dynasty history and art. The reunion of collection objects from the two Palace Museums after sixty years of separation also marks a momentous occasion in the cultural exchange across the Taiwan Strait and is an important event for institutions with relevant collections in Chinese art around the world and those involved in the field of Qing history.
"Harmony and Integrity: The Yongzheng Emperor and His Times" is being co-hosted by the National Palace Museum and the Palace Museum in Beijing with the Cultural Foundation of the United Daily News Group serving as a third-party institution to sign the loan contracts. The host media for the exhibit are the United Daily News Group and Phoenix Satellite Television, and the major sponsors are Yuanta Financial Holdings and the Yuanta Foundation.
"Harmony and Integrity: The Yongzheng Emperor and His Times" is divided into two major sections, "The Life and Times of the Yongzheng Emperor" and "Art and Culture in the Yongzheng Era," the display marks the first time that cultural objects have been used to present a complete understanding of the Yongzheng Emperor and his achievements in government, art, and culture. The exhibit features 246 sets of masterpieces, including archives, books, documents, maps, portraits, paintings, calligraphy, inkstones, porcelains, lacquerware, agate carvings, glassware, and enamelware. Loan institutions to the exhibit include not only the Beijing Palace Museum, but also the Shanghai Museum, the Institute of History and Philology at Academia Sinica, and U.C. Pharmaceuticals.
