Mt. Kuan-yin Here, the long distinctive roof of the old Tamsui post office is seen in bird's-eye perspective from a hillside above the streets of Tamsui. Fishing boats travel on the Tamsui River in the middleground as the beauty of Mt. Kuan-yin is sketched majestically on the opposite bank. As buildings have been torn down and new ones built in Tamsui, much of the foreground scenery here no longer exists. Compositionally, Liao placed the post office building along a central axis with the mountain to form a stable balanced arrangement. The first two works here were done fairly close in time and are very similar in content and composition. The greatest difference lies in the colors. One was done basically in warm colors with the river and sky in hues of yellow. Furthermore, the dramatic rooftop colors in the foreground seem to compete for our attention. In the other work, the water and sky are pinker in color, and the mountain and buildings are darker.

Tamkang Scenery Though the forms in these two paintings are clear and discernible, their coloring stands apart from the real world. In other words, they have been rendered through the artist's imagination and mind, perhaps representing a world of flux and change inspired by the small town of Tamsui in the fading light of the sunset. This was much like the effect sought by Impressionist painters.
