Yueh-yang
Lookout
Attributed to Li Sheng (fl. 10th c.), Five Dynasties
Album leaf, ink on silk, 23 x 23.3 cm
Yueh-yang lookout was located
at West Gate in Yueh-yang County, Hunan. In the Northern Sung (960-1126), the official
T'eng Tzu-ching was demoted to Pa-ling, from where he had the lookout rebuilt. He asked
the renowned scholar Fan Ch'ung-yen to compose a record, which made the site famous. The
tower here is located on walled ramparts and beyond lies the beauty of Lake Tung-t'ing.
This anonymous work was
erroneously attributed to Li Sheng in the past. In fact, the trees, rocks, and buildings
are all similar to those in the Peking Palace Museum's "Yueh-yang Lookout" by
Hsia Yung. Hsia, active in the mid-14th century, was a native of Hangchow who often did
such paintings that he inscribed with poetical references to famous sites.
