Ch'eng-hua reign (1465-1487) mark, Ming Dynasty
Height: 3.7 cm, diameter: 7.3 cm, diameter of base: 3.4 cm

This cup has a slightly flared rim, deep body with a rounded lower portion, flat bottom, and shallow foot ring. On the exterior are two scenes: on one side is T'ao Yuan-ming enjoying chrysanthemums and on the other Chou Tun-i admiring lotus flowers. Each is accompanied by a young servant; one presents his master with yellow chrysanthemums, the other holds a book. The figures, rocks, pines, bamboo, railing and bamboo fence are painted in underglaze blue, while red, green, yellow and orange overglaze colors are used for the chrysanthemums, lotus flowers, lotus leaves and pine branches. The underglaze blue has a subdued, grayish tone and the white glaze has a greenish-yellow tint. The six-character standard script mark ("Ta Ming Ch'eng-hua nien chih") appears in underglaze blue in two lines on the bottom of the cup inside a double square outline.

The National Palace Museum boasts many Ch'eng-hua overglaze enamel cups depicting T'ao Yuan-ming and Chou Tun-i. The white glaze on all of them bear a slight greenish-yellow tint, and the underglaze blue is a subdued, grayish blue.
