History
of the exhibition
Born in Taiwan, Mr. Peng Kai-dong (Japanese
name: Nitta Mune Ichi), later emigrated to Japan, but has
always considered Taiwan his native home. On the occasion
of a half-century of collecting, Mr. Peng has donated his
entire collection to the National Palace Museum in honor of
his country of birth. The 359 objects included in his donation
encompass a wide variety of objects, with the majority of
the collection comprised of gilt-bronze Buddhist sculptures,
but including as well a number of bronze ritual objects and
musical instruments. These works of art represent periods
spanning from the 11th century B.C. to more recent times,
as well as diverse cultures and countries from India, Southeast
Asia, China, to Japan and Korea, bringing together the splendid
and varied arts of Asia.
