| The Diamond (Vajracchedika-prajnaparamita) Sutra |
| First translated into Chinese by the Indian monk Kumarajiva
(344-415), Later Ch'in dynasty Handwritten edition dated 1253 by Chang Chi-chih (1186-1266), Sung dynasty |
Chang Chi-chih was a famous calligrapher
of the Southern Sung period whose works were much admired in the neighboring
Chin dynasty. He studied the style of the Northern Sung master Mi Fu and
added elements of the T'ang dynasty manners of Ou-yang Hsün and Yang Chen-ch'ing
to create a style of his own. The characters in his calligraphy are strict
and studied, his forte being brushwork. In this version of The Diamond
Sutra, the characters are archaicly elegant as the strokes flow freely,
as if the entire text was done in one sitting. Although the script is standard, elements of running calligraphy are also found. This was once in the collection of Hsiang Tu-shou of the Ming dynasty and was prized by the Ch'ien-lung Emperor of the Ch'ing dynasty. |
