| Meat-shaped
stone
‧Meat-shaped Stone moved to exhibition "Nature and Human in Unison – the Smart Carvings of Jade and Beautiful Stones" in gallery 302 on December 31, 2009.
A
piece of jade can be cleverly transformed
by carving it into the form of a vegetable,
while another mineral is naturally rendered
to imitate a piece of meat. This "Meat-shaped
stone" looks just like stewed pork.
Not only are the layers of fat and lean
meat clearly defined, even the pores
on the skin above are completely rendered.
This piece and "Jadeite cabbage"
are two of the Museum's most famous
masterpieces that show how great craftsmanship
not only enhance the beauty and features
of natural objects, but it sometimes
even outdoes them.
