In addition to objects made of tusk, bone, bamboo and wood, the Yü-ting-ning Studio boasts a sizable collection of Chinese rare books as well, and the majority of these fall into the category of history. While the collection is made up largely of Ming and Ch'ing editions, there are also titles printed in the early years of the Republic and Chinese-language books printed in Japan. Prior to his retirement, the late Director Chin Hsiao-yi donated to the Museum a total of 42 sets of rare imprints, numbering more than 2,000 volumes. However, as the space in the gallery forbids the exhibition of the bequest in its entirety, only four titles have been selected for presentation, namely T'ung-chih-t'ang ching-chieh, Shih-chi, Yi-chieh-ching yin-yi and Su Wen-chung-kung shih-chi. Representative of the four divisions of the Classics, history, philosophy and literature in traditional Chinese book classification, the selection features official and private imprints, as well as a red-and-black-ink printing during the Ming to Ch'ing dynasties and an imprint from Japan. They serve to illustrate the comprehensive scope of Director Chin's private library and its variety of bibliographical editions and richness of holdings.
