:::
The Ch'ing court, with financial resources and skilled craftsmen at its disposal, created a large number of opulently bound books produced in a number of formats, including the scroll, "sutra pleated-leaf", "Indian pressed", "butterfly", "wrapped back", and most commonly found thread binding. These come in a variety of sizes, depending on the contents, and all facets of the books were rigorously controlled, including covers, box sets, choice of materials, and use of colors. Production was equally refined, with many different complementary materials chosen, from wood to jade and camel bone. Reflecting the dignity and authority of the imperial clan, such attention to every facet of production is rarely found in the history of bookbinding.
