Competition Entry Kris Yao

:::
 Kris Yao's Artech Architects proposed a design concept of "conceal". In difference from the international architects that we are familiar with using strong and individualistic forms to create a strong impression, Kris Yao proposed a concept of "conceal" for the Southern Branch, instead focusing on "concealing" the form of the architecture.

The artificial lake and the arc of museum buildings are like two links, creating a symbiotic relationship.

At first glance, Yao's design is a series of buildings constructed in a circular arc around the artificial lake, with upper floors as the museum exhibits and lower levels mainly containing various service functions. The artificial lake and the arc of museum buildings are like two links, creating a symbiotic relationship. The museum's exhibitions and spaces of various functions are also organized along this circular circulation path.

But when visitors approach the museum from afar, they will not see any obvious landmark building; instead they will see the land rising up and the trees as if hiding something. Only when they get closer will they start to experience more diverse visual spaces—a waterfall at the boundary of the inner and outer artificial lakes, a rectangular pool at the entrance to the museum, even the view of the museum lobby as one faces the lake. Kris Yao uses a strategy of enshrouding and concealment to reflect modestly the Asian position of the Southern Branch. An architecture that receives and reflects, rather than possesses and proounces, is our goal for the design.
