The vision for the National Palace Museum Southern Branch is to be a world-class museum of Asian art and culture that will foster a new consciousness of the cultural connections between Taiwan and the rest of Asia and the world beyond. This will be realized through innovative and technologically-advanced exhibits within an exceptional building of outstanding architecture, and within the context of a 75-hectare cultural campus that includes within it themed gardens, water features, event spaces and room for a variety of related non-museum uses.
The Mission of the new museum is three-fold:
- To explore and seek understanding of the complex interactions and dynamic relationships among Asian cultures as expressed in the arts of Asian peoples.
- To place Taiwan at the center of Asia's dynamic diversity, past and present.
- To place its collections and exhibitions in a building of world-renowned architectural distinction set in an equally beautiful landscape, providing Taiwan with a new aesthetic and cultural attraction of world standard.
Based on the objectives above, we hope that the Southern Branch Museum might realize the following aspirations:
- A New Identity and a New Cultural Consciousness : As a world-class institution offering new insights into a vibrant and enduring heritage, the National Palace Museum Southern Branch will make millions of people aware – throughout Taiwan and the world – of Asian culture and its connections to cultural expressions across the globe. The National Palace Museum Southern Branch will change the consciousness of people through one of the most advanced digital sites in the world, scholarly publications of its Research Institute on Asian cultures and Taiwan, and a signature image created by the museum's distinctive architecture and landscaping. Within Taiwan it will foster a new consciousness of the links between Taiwan and the rest of Asia and the world.
- A Zone of Culture of Innovation : The grounds and heritage landscaping will serve as a "cultural campus" – home of themed gardens, performance spaces and activity pavilions.
- Architectural Icon : The National Palace Museum Southern Branch building will be an aesthetic and thematic statement in itself. Innovative architectural design will express the pan-Asian mission and intellectual perspective of the institution while establishing a distinct structural identity. As visitors approach the museum building they will know that they are about to experience new perspectives and insights into Asian culture, and the place of Taiwan in it.
- Authentic Encounters in Great Spaces : Entering the museum building will be a powerfully transformative experience in itself. Visitors will feel as though they are entering a place unlike any other – an intellectual and imaginative world dedicated to the appreciation of the meaning of Asian art and culture and their connections to other societies.
- New and Enduring Perspectives : The galleries of the museum will also host great exhibitions from other institutions – particularly those that express links between Taiwan, Asia and the rest of the world. These changing exhibitions and programs will further support NPMSB's role as an international cultural authority on Asian art and culture, a role that will be strengthened by the museum's International Research Institute for the study of Asian cultures and their relationships with Taiwan and with each other.
