ANTIQUITIES REVEALED—Scientific Scrutiny of Cultural Relics at the National Palace Museum

Introduction

In recent years, the scientific scrutiny of antiquities has played an indispensable role in conservation and restoration, exhibition, publication, acquisition, and studies on craftsmanship at the National Palace Museum. It has assisted in addressing and clarifying related issues, such as the preservation and process technology of the Tibetan Dragon Sutra(龍藏經) and the Xīqīng xùjiàn(西清續鑑) Mirror Case Set; the inner structures and fabrication techniques of ivory balls, revolving vases, bronzes and other artifacts; the identification and characterization of jade, gemstones, ceramics, pigments and dyes, etc.

In order to enable the public of all ages to have an understanding of the scientific analysis of antiquities, this exhibition, taking Using science and technology to reveal antiquities as the main axis, conducts the audience to the secret halls for revealing antiquities: Inquiry House, Experiment Pavilion and Decryption Building. Through a variety of display ways, the audience will be led to experience a vivid and interesting journey of education and exploration to reveal the mystery of antiquities. Besides the knowledge of scientific scrutiny of antiquities, the legends and multi-faceted connotations of ancient cultural relics are expectedly explored.
