Introduction
Three hundred years before today, Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), a Jesuit missionary from Milan, Italy, came to China to preach. He made a landfall in Macao where he adopted the Chinese name Lang Shi-ning. Even though he came to China as a missionary, he became an official court painter thanks to his excellent art skills. As an artist, he served three emperors—Kangxi (1661-1722), Yongzheng (1723-1735), and Qianlong (1736-1795)—for a period of 51 years. His artistic style, which combined western oil painting with eastern traditional painting techniques, opened a new perspective in the imperial art circle.
Three hundred years ago, Giuseppe Castiglione overcame geographic limits and crossed the sea to China. The resulting cultural and ideological exchange shaped his unique style. This exhibition uses integrated virtual reality to reproduce his artistic achievements in an interactive and multi-sensory experiential environment. By innovatively applying digital art and light-sound technologies to reinterpret Castiglione’s unique east and west visual experience, this exhibition explores the future aesthetic of virtual neorealism.
