Introduction
The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum is finally open to the public in Taibao City, Chiayi County! The main beam at the Museum is engraved with characters for "Eternal Stability and Constant Harmony," terms that come from two precious objects on display, "Jade Candlestick of Constant Harmony" and "Gold Chalice of Eternal Stability," both made under the order of the Qianlong emperor (r. 1735-1796) of the Qing dynasty. Together, these two objects expressed a wish for stability by the Qianlong emperor while conveying the aspiration to bring peace and prosperity to the people. These auspicious phrases have now become a prominent part of the Southern Branch to likewise wish for a successful opening and solid foundation while hoping that the country prospers and the people are bestowed with good fortune!
