Introduction
This is an exhibition catalogue written for the Origins and Developments of the Lingnan School of Painting Special Exhibition. The Lingnan School of Painting possesses great importance in the history of modern Chinese painting, with the appearance of many promising and talented artists whose fame quickly spread to equal those from the Beijing and Shanghai School of Painting, forming a triumvirate with them. The Lingnan School of Painting advocates “balancing Chinese and foreign, blending ancient and modern,” initiating a reform movement involving “new Chinese painting.” It enjoyed numerous subsequent followers and produced widespread and far-reaching influences on modern painting. This exhibition features precious works from the Lingnan School of Painting from the National Palace Museum’s collection, as well as those from the Guangzhou Museum of Art, the Lingnan Fine Arts Museum at Academia Sinica, and Yicui Shantang, enabling visitors to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the artistic achievements of the Lingnan masters.
